Hi!

HoudahSpot can be uninstalled by dragging the application to the Trash.

If you wish, you may also remove the following files and folders from your home folder:

~/Library/Application Support/com.houdah.HoudahSpot4
~/Library/Preferences/com.houdah.HoudahSpot4.plist
~/Library/Preferences/com.houdah.HoudahSpot4.HoudahSpotHelper.plist

Best,
Pierre Bernard

Thanks,

I managed to find another 6 files that had Houdahspot in their names -

you should really tell people about all the files to install.

Many Thanks,

~Robert.

Hi Robert,

Dragging the HoudahSpot app to the Trash does uninstall the application in the sense that no HoudahSpot code / executable is left on the machine.

Deleting the above mentioned preferences and support files is optional. Deleting these files just saves you a few kilobytes of disk space.

I can't think of any other files created by HoudahSpot. There may however be files created by the system on HoudahSpot's behalf. I expect these to be temporary cache files that should go away after some time.

Please share the list of files you have found.

Best,
Pierre Bernard

Hi Pierre,

My ~/Library/Application Support/com.houdah.HoudahSpot4 is 3.5MB

As well as the files you listed, iTrash finds:
~/Library/Preferences/com.houdah.HoudahSpot4.HoudahSpotHelper.plist
~/Library/Caches/com.houdah.HoudahSpot4.HoudahSpotHelper  (which is empty)
~/Library/Caches/com.houdah.HoudahSpot4

AppCleaner also finds:
~/Library/Logs/HoudahSpot
and 8 folders in /var/folders/76

I have also found:
~/Library/Caches/com.houdah.TextContentService

The caches and some of the /var folders are not recreated at boot time - they persist.

This just highlights the mess that is Mac application installation and removal.  And Mac App Store apps with containers, sandboxing and sometimes iCloud integration leave even more stuff lying around.  Doesn't really matter for a user with a few apps, but for an app junkie it requires constant vigilance.

Hi Robert,

The /var/folders/ files should be temporary. So should be the Log and Caches files.

AFAIK, the /var/folders/ should be taken care of during a later reboot. I believe the logs and caches are taken care of by one of the periodic scripts. macOS has 3 scripts (daily, weekly, monthly) that are run periodically to clean up temporary files.

The ~/Library/Logs/HoudahSpot folder is empty on my Mac. Logs are cleared periodically by the system.

The folders in /var/folders/ and ~/Library/Caches/ seem to have been created by WebKit. That's the macOS component that backs Safari. It is used by HoudahSpot to show release notes of updates. It also gets used by Quick Look preview when you use it to preview web pages. WebKit caches the downloaded content. Such content should be purged after some time. I can only assume this happens during boot or by way of the temporary scripts.

To me the important part of uninstalling an app is that no part of it is left running or capable of running, trying to load on startup, etc. With regular applications, macOS does a very good job here. There usually is only the .app to trash. No libraries, DLLs, plug-ins, etc. left to interfere with other applications.

Best,
Pierre Bernard
