The Holux GPSport 245 (USB) is officially supported by HoudahGPS.

Type: Holux GR-245
Port: USB
Name: SLAB_USBtoUART

I get several different errors like "this ist not a MTK based GPS" or "failed, see log". But there are no information about it.

BT747 can connect to it through /dev/cu.SLAB_USBtoUART but I have to set the speed to 38400. With full speed it doesn't work either. I assume that HoudahGPS sets the speed too high. It needs to be at 38400.

There are no settings for this. How can I fix it?

Thanks

Hi!

HoudahGPS uses the defaults for GPSBabel.

Thank you for the heads-up. I obviously have no Holux GPSport 245 to test with.

I will see if I can reduce the speed or make it a setting.

Best,
Pierre Bernard

Thanky you.  This is good news.
Baud rate used for download

The following baud rates can be used: 4800, 9600, 19200, 38400, 57600, 115200, 230400. Note that your logger might not support all of them (especially 230400 which isn't documented in the chipset manual, though there are known devices that are capable of this speed).

If baud=0 (zero) download takes place at the baud rate the device is currently set to. This is especially useful for Bluetooth connections since they often don't allow changing the baud rate.

...
initbaud=38400,baud=38400
According to this it should be possible to set BabelGPS to a lower speed. The automatic value doesn't work with this device. If you need someone to test feel free to send me the new version.

Hi!

Unfortunately it appears that GPSBabel does not offer this option for the MTK protocol.
mtk_logger: This is not a MTK based GPS ! (or is it turned off?)
Well the device is on, connected and it works with bt747.

However I could acquire by chance data by using the type Holux M-241. But most of the times the message above was shown too. I don't understand how it can work with bt747 but not with HoudahGPS. Why is it supported anyway? With GPSBabelFE it works a little better. (1.4.2)

Here's a guide to use GR-245 with GPS-Babel:

Am I missing something?

Hi!

Holux uses a slightly modified version of the MTK protocol. The GR-245 should work with the profile for the M-241 (rather than the generic MTK one).

I read this too. However on the website (German) I sent you is explained how to patch the GPSBabel to get it working. Maybe this has to be done in order to use it properly. If I try 20 times it only works once. But at least it works so I think the bug can be fixed.

Thanks

Hi!

The German web page is about GPSBabel 1.3.6. HoudahGPS 5.0 uses GPSBabel 1.4.2. This new version should work with the GR-245.

Do you find the native interface of GPSBabel to be more reliable than HoudahGPS?
If so, please send me a screenshot of the setting you are using in GPSBabel.

Best,
Pierre Bernard

Actually not really better but if you have some parameters I could check I will test them. I already downloaded the recent version of GPSBabel.

If you could send me some parameters I can try to find some that work.

Btw. Does it work for anyone with a GPSport GR-245?

Hi!

I don't have any reports of HoudahGPS / HoudahGeo working or not with the GR-245. I however read that the GR-245 works fine the m241 format as implemented by GPSBabel. It thus should work fine with HoudahGPS.

The options are documented here. I don't see any option which could influence the reliability of the transfer.

Best,
Pierre Bernard
