Pierre,

Is there any way to search for Sierra Finder tags where the tag has been added on a specific date? 'Tag Time' looks like it does this for Open Meta tags but not for Finder tags.

I keep my home and work computers synchronised by using HoudahSpot to copy new/changed files from one to the other each day. I'd like to also be able to copy newly tagged files, but can't see how to do this!

Thanks

Hi!

I don’t think macOS keeps track of when Finder tags were added to files.

Best,

Hi nortical,

As Pierre says, macOS does not keep track of the time when tags are changed.  This is what I know - some of which I am sure you already know.

Leap http://www.ironicsoftware.com/leap/ continues to update the OpenMeta tag time so long as you use Leap to manage tags (and maybe some other apps, but never use Finder).

It is then possible in Finder (but not HoudahSpot) to do a search query on tag modification time using a raw query like:

kMDItemOMUserTagTime >= $time.iso(20170601T000000)

You would need to experiment.

Pierre will correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think HoudahSpot allows a raw spotlight query.

Hi!

HoudahSpot can search Open Meta tag time. Go to Search > Add Criterion > Add Other… and search for Open Meta.

HoudahSpot does not allow for you to input raw Spotlight queries.

Hi Pierre,

I get no results when I search for 'open' in the list of allowed tags (on the MacBook I am using right now).  But, since you are so certain, I tried on my desktop Mac.  Surprise!  That Mac has all the open meta tags available in both HS and Spotlight searches - just as you say.

This is for the same document set (I synchronise regularly).   And the files on the MacBook do have the openmeta tags.   I will investigate further what it is that has turned on the open meta tag search on one Mac and not the other.

Spotlight compiles the list of attributes from the installed importer plug-ins. Do you have an OpenMeta tagging application installed on your MacBook?

Yes, I have Leap.

So far:

1. Research: Spotlight should see openmeta tags so long as they are written into the Apple namespace. See: http://tagamac.com/2009/02/using_openmeta/  [Then the specific importer is not important.]  I have to work out how to turn that on.  It is probably something in Leap.  Maybe all I have to do is to tell Spotlight to re-index - will try that later.

2. Specific to the kMDItemOMUserTagTime metadata, it is not always written/updated.  For example, Finder doesn't seem to update it when tags are added, whilst Leap does.

I will investigate further tomorrow and hopefully find something useful.

I have got there.

I ran 'Tagit' (from ironic software) on my newer Mac.  Now 'Tag Time' is shown.

In summary, to use Tag Time:

1. When creating/modifying tags, must use Leap or Tagit.  Not Finder.

2. To see 'Tag Time' in HS/Spotlight, must run Tagit (just once).  Otherwise need the raw query.
