I am testing the trial version  of HoudahSpot.

Is it possible to search for a list of file names in a series?

example: 1984261 1952178 1952832 1955422 1958612 1959876 1963063 1963365 1966860 1970519 1971416 1971896 1972431

My initial tests makes it appear that it can't.

Thank you in advance R

Hi!

There is no way to directly specify a list of names to search for.

You could set up a search with an “Any of the following are true” group that has a row for each name you want to match.

You can also try this approach to find the files one by one: https://blog.houdah.com/2016/06/find-files-from-a-list-of-names/

Yes, HoudahSpot is scriptable. But not to the point of being able to add or configure search criteria.

You can however pass it a “query” for the main search field. Check “Chapter 7. Automate HoudahSpot” in the user guide to see how you can do this using Apple Script.

“Chapter 8.2. Advanced Uses of the Search Field” explains how you can use the search field.

E.g. you could say “filename:1984261.* or filename:1952178.* …”

HoudahSpot is a great product. It is very fast.

However, it can't search a list of names it will not meet our needs.

Finding the file one by one is too cumbersome. (re: blog link)

I am trying to think of a way that HoudahSpot could search names from a list?

Perhaps a droplet? Drag the text list to the droplet and it would "feed" HoudahSpot one entry at a time. One entry>Return Result>Go to next entry.

on open dropped items
repeat with aFile in dropped items
tell application "HodahSpot"
etc etc

...........

i still don't understand why the program won't return a result for ex: 1952834 1955420 1958639? if this is entered into the search field why wouldn't return ALL of the documents with those number sequences in the file name?

Thank you for the feedback.

Your example would search for files that match all 3 numbers.

Try this in the search field:

search:filename 1952834 OR 1955420 OR 1958639

This has HoudahSpot search for file names that contain any of the 3 numbers.

that does work!

now i have to figure out how to take a list and add "or" after entry on the list [frown]

our current workflow involves capturing text list from a PDF and importing it into the search field of the search software

our current software excepts a text file list, without modification, but it is slow.

I am no expert on Apple Script. Google pointed me at an post on Apple’s discussion board that appears very promising: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3678943?tstart=0

On Stack Overflow I saw a rather smart way of concatenating strings: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/6301156/append-text-to-a-string-in-applescript

I’d assume you can use “ OR “ as a delimiter.
