It is nice how HoudahGeo can select iPhoto's libraries... But how about its professional counterpart Apple Aperture 1.5? When do you plan to support+integrate with that software's own photo libraries?. Thank you.

HoudahGeo supports Aperture in the same way as iPhoto.

You can select photos and albums from both programs in the very same library import sheet.

I do this:

1. Start HoudahGeo
2. Go to "Step 1: Import GPS tracks..."
3. Select first button: "Add images from Library"
4. Dialog box pops with ONLY iPhone libraries... None of my 5 Aperture libraries show up. I tried with both Aperture active or closed to no avail. I tried "Open" and Aperture libraries appear as grayed-out

How come you have several Aperture libraries?

Are you using an utility which stores Aperture libraries in a non standard location?

Nope... Aperture 1.5 allows you to do this. Through Aperture's own Preferences you can decide what Library it will open on application restart (There is no official location of a library for Aperture) I have several in different connected drives and a main one under the folder "Pictures" in Leopard on my internal System drive... HoudaGeo detects no one.

Could you pleas try the iMedia Browser (http://www.karelia.com/imedia/) and report back if it finds your Aperture libraries?

BTW, you may use iMedia Browser as a workaround. You can drag photos form iMedia to HoudahGeo

HoudahGeo checks the ApertureLibraries property in the ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iApps.plist file.

Please verify this value is correctly set.

I have checked ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iApps.plist and Aperture is not listed in that file. I don't know how to add it, or why it isn't here. I have a standard account, I don't do my main work in an administrator account if that matters.

I sure would like to see my Aperture Library in HoudahGeo, like the iPhoto library. I have many pictures in there I'd like to GeoTag.

Thanks,

Lisa

Hi!

Aperture photos should be accessible if you tick the "Share previews with iLife and iWork" preference in Aperture.

I don't use previews in Aperture because I use a laptop and don't have enough room to keep previews and originals, and don't want to have the wrong masters with me.

If you just check "Share Previews with iLife and iWork" in the Aperture preferences, your Aperture library will show up, but there will be no photos displayed to choose.

Just to try things out, I did set previews for one project, which then showed up in HoudahGeo. I then Geotagged them, writing the EXIF data to the original, but the tags did not show up in Aperture. I exported a version and looked at it using Reveal <http://albumshaper.sourceforge.net/> but the Geo Data did not show up. So I exported the Master, but Reveal didn't show the data in the EXIF tag on the Master either.

When I use HoudahGeo to tag my files before importing them to Aperture, the data is visible in both Aperture and with Reveal.

If I open my Aperture library in the Finder, using Show Package Contents, then open an Aperture Project using Show Package Contents, I can drag the folder that says something like this "2007-12-02 @ 06/53/22 PM - 1.apimportgroup" into HoudahGeo, then tag all the originals. The data doesn't show up on my versions, but it does if I create a n new version from the Master.

If I "Work on the original images" and "Write to XMP sidecar files," I get the same results, no reference in Aperture, until I create new versions. If I check only "Write to XMP sidecar files" I get a new folder with all my project images and sidecars, and Reveal shows the GPS data on the new image. If I delete my original project and reimport those, I have Geo Data, but have of course lost all my editing, keywords, and ratings.

I am shooting raw files (Nikon .nef) most of the time, and haven't tested all this with .jpg files, so I don't know if that makes any difference.

I was hoping for a way to add geo data easily to my older files, that I can then find in my metadata browser in Aperture, but unless I create new versions from my masters after doing the Show Package Contents and dragging them to HoudahGeo I can't see that data in Aperture.

I'll certainly add HoudahGeo to my workflow after EXIFRenamer and before importing to Aperture, but I still wish for a good way to get that data on my older shots. Using Previews doesn't help, because the data doesn't make it my Masters.

Thanks for writing a program that does what it does well, it's not your fault I want to change history ;-)

Hi!

The problem is that Aperture focuses on non-destructive editing. It never touches the originals and doesn't want anyone else do do so. Thus it hands out only previews. That's what HoudahGeo gets to work on. These previews will be trashed the next time you edit the image in Aperture.

This is detailed in the HoudahGeo Help documentation.

You will find that there are two very different workflows for working with HoudahGeo:

1. Geotagging originals. For that you will want to get HoudahGeo in the process as early as possible. HoudahGeo's task will end with writing to EXIF/XMP to the files or the sidecar. Images should only the be added to Aperture, iPhoto or Lightroom.

2. Publishing photos. You can grab a selection of your photos and - if not yet geotagged - geotag them now. Then you upload to Flickr! or publish to Google Earth.

As a workaround for you current situation, I would suggest you try locating the actual master files within your Aperture library using the Finder. You can drag those to HoudahGeo and work with them. I strongly suggest having a current backup before altering your master files.

Best,
Pierre Bernard
