I've found that when I search for "filename" contains, e.g. using the string "grep" (without quotation marks), HS would retrieve files with filenames matching grep as well as g-rep (with hyphen between g and r). I would like to prevent this from happening, i.e., I don't want HS to find non-exact matches, unless I specify otherwise. Any thoughts on how I could make this happen?

Hi!

This is a feature that triggers what appears to be a Spotlight bug.

HoudahSpot runs searches using the Spotlight engine. You can see the query handed to Spotlight in the "Raw Query" window. HoudahSpot always asks for searches to be insensitive to diacritical marks. That's set by the final "d" in the query:

kMDItemFSName == "grep.rtf"cd

This has Spotlight ignore the hyphen. I would argue that the hyphen is not a diacritical mark and consider this a Spotlight bug. I assume the logic behind this is to ignore the hyphen because it can be used when wrapping text. In that case it is not really part of the word / text.

Currently there is no option to have HoudahSpot run a search that does not ignore diacritical marks.

Hi!

On second thought, there is a way that gets you close to what you want to do. Type the following into the search field at the top of the HoudahSpot 4 window:

kMDItemFSName:"grep"c

HoudahSpot translates this to the following Spotlight query:

kMDItemFSName = "grep*"c

I.e. it runs a case insensitive search for file names beginning with "grep"
