As soon as I type anything, even a single character, into the "Spotlight comment contains ____" box, no files are found.

Hi!

Are you sure there are files with matching Spotlight comments in the location you are searching in?

Could you send a screenshot of the Spotlight comment as well as the HoudahSpot query that fails to find it?

Best,
Pierre Bernard

Screenshot attached. Note the finder window includes the highlighted file fotoFlag.pdf. The Info window on the far right shows that its Spotlight Comment is "&iFile &fotoFlag &photo &form". The HoudahSpot window lists the pdf files in the folder. If I type an "&" (or any other character) into HoudahSpot's Spotlight comment field, all the files in its list disappear.

Hi!

It appears that the files in question are located on an external drive.

Are you sure this drive is fully indexed by the Leopard version of Spotlight?

I.e. if the default Spotlight interface can't find the file by contents or comment, the file is not yet indexed.

Best,
Pierre Bernard

Those files are on an drive in a system running Tiger. Is that a problem? Can the Leopard machine index the files so this can be made to work?

Hi!

Unfortunately this won't work as expected. Tiger and Leopard use different Spotlight indexes.
