I need to find files inside of MacPorts. But your file  chooser will not allow me to navigate to /opt.  It is not listed! This is a "hidden" file. We need to be able to search for files in hidden directories!

Hi!

You may press command-shift-G in the open panel to access folders by path.

You will probably first need to force Spotlight to index /opt using the mdimport command in Terminal.app

Boy, that is unobvious! Why isn't it just there? Or have a check box to view hidden folders?

Hi!

"Go to folder" is actually a feature of the standard Mac OS X Open/save panel.
I am not sure where it is documented, but you will find it to be working an all Mac OS X applications.

Hi!

I tried to find documentation for all open/save panel shortcuts, but couldn't find any.

I did however run into this Mac OX X hints article. It appears that you can just start typing a path beginning with a '/' to open the Go to Folder sheet.
