Hello, I'm trying to formulate a houdah search that finds all files that match the following logic:

1) contain phrase "long shot", "long-shot", or "longshot" as text content.

2) do not contain phrase "shot" as text content. Note this is a substring of the strings used in  criteria 1. So e.g. I'd like to exclude files matching "blahblah... shot" and "heard a shot" with the exception of the specific phrases used in criteria 1.

Can this be done?

Any hints appreciated! Thanks a lot in advance!

Hi!

You just need to search for the 3 exact phrases you want to find: "long shot", "long-shot", or "longshot”. There is no need to add an exclusion since “heard a shot” matches neither of the phrases.

Set up as follows:

- “Any” of the following are true:
- - “Text Content” “contains phrase” “long shot” (don’t type the quotes)
- - “Text Content” “contains phrase” “long-shot”
- - “Text Content” “contains phrase” “longshot”

Hello, thanks for your response. I wasn't clear... I mean, the exclusion of "shot" should apply to any occurance of "shot" but the ones found with the first part of the query. So I want documents that contain phrases "long shot", "long-shot", or "longshot", but not those that contain "shot" in any other combination or just by itself. The problem seems that "shot" is a sub string of the others.

Hi!

I am still not sure I understand how you want the search to work.

Let’s say you have three documents with the following content:

1. “He heard a shot”
2. “That was a long-shot”
3. “Surviving a shot to the head is a long-shot"

The search I suggested above will find #2 and #3, but not #1.

Are you saying you only want #2 and exclude #3 because it contains “shot” as a freestanding word in addtion to containing “long-shot”?

Yes, I want #2 and exclude #3 because it contains “shot” as a freestanding word in addtion to containing “long-shot”.

Thanks a lot!

Hi!

I don’t think there is a general purpose solution for this search.

You could add the following to the above search:
- “None” of the following are true:
- - “Text Content” “contains phrase” “ shot ” (with the spaces, but without the quotes)

This would exlcude the free-standing word “shot”. There are however lots of other cases to cover. E.g. shot followed by a period rather than a space.

I don’t think there is more that can be done with search.
