"Content Kind is Video" is not finding my .mkv (Matroska) and .divx video files. Is there a way for me to add these to the database myself?

Hi!

HoudahSpot relies on the hierarchy of Universal Type Identifiers (UTIs). When a third party application introduces a file type, it specifies a file extension and a UTI. It also specifies where the UTI fits in the existing hierarchy. I.e. it can declare that the new UTI conforms to the "public.video" UTI.

To modify this set-up, you would need to know which application has claimed the .mkv extension. Then you could modify the Info.plist where the application has declared the file type. After that you will need to have Spotlight reindex .mkv files. An update to the modified application will break this.

The easier solution is to nest the "content kind is video" criterion in an "any of the following is true" group.

Add two "content type" criteria to the group. Use "find by example" to set up these criteria: Drag a .mkv file from Finder onto the criterion, drop it anywhere but on the text field. The criterion will update to match the file.

Your search will say: file is video, or .mkv or DiVX.

Save that search as a template.
