Cursor Focus

Member #781
I want my Default Template to open with the cursor blinking in the first field of Refine rather than the topmost search box. I had it working that way before but I just moved to a new computer, moved my templates and prefs over, but now the Default Template or any saved template, new or old, reverts to starting the cursor in that main search field.

Hi!

This is in HoudahSpot > Preferences > Advanced. Check “First input field in Refine pane"

I swear I went through all the preferences but I missed that. As soon as I saw it after reading youe reply I remembered setting that once before.

Thanks for the quick reply.

In my case it's Display Name - contains [ … … … ]

I'm using Keyboard Shortcut to evoke this search, which always focuses (cursor blinking) to the "Search Any Text" at top.

Now with HS 6.3 there is no Advanced Setting as in 2016.

Is there any way to bring the focus to the first Refine(d) Search?

In newer versions of HoudahSpot, the setting is under Preferences…/Settings… > General > Searches open with keyboard focus on - first input field in Refine pane

I'm running Version 6.4 (Build 830). I've selected First input field in the Refine pane in under Settings > General and I get the expected behavior for default new search scenarios:

  • when I launch the application
  • when selecting New search window from the menu while the application is running
  • when selection New search tab from the menu while the application is running

However, when I launch any of the Templates—either selecting from the Templates menu or using a keyboard shortcut—neither the first input field in the Refine pane nor the global "Search Any Text" field have focus. Instead, the focus order appears to follow this path through the tab order:

  1. start with visual focus (current item state) on the top item in the results pane
  2. on first Tab, focus isn't visible
  3. on second Tab, focus is set in the global "Search Any Text" field
  4. on third Tab, focus isn't visible
  5. on fourth Tab, focus is set in the first input field in the Refine pane

Is there any way to get the First input field in the Refine pane preference to apply when opening Templates as well?

Thanks,

Which template are you using?

Templates can be saved from a running search or from a prepared search.

Templates saved from a running search start running/searching as soon as you open the template. E.g. the "Applications" sample template immediately starts listing applications. HoudahSpot then puts the focus on the first search result so you can navigate results using arrow key or immediately open an item from search results.

Templates saved from prepared/stopped searches should follow the preference. E.g. the "Apple Mail Messages" template puts the focus to the main search field or the first item in the refine pane.
