I have no idea why this is happening, but all of a sudden, my Houdah Google Earth files are ridiculously large. It's almost as if the images are being embedded into my KML (?). When I look at the code, it is linked to the 320 pix images on my desktop, so I am really confused. They are basically unusable. One KML with 1000 images is 38 MB?? Ahhhh! One with 5000 images is 180 MB!!! :-P

Please help - must get project out today - never had this problem before.

Also- one suggestion, please which would really save a lot of time. Please make iamges by default list by file name, but my timestamp, or at least make it a preference option. Time-consuming to reset each time, and if I forget, I have to start all over again.

Thanks!!

Hi!

KML files are just text files.
Could you use a text editor like TextMate, TextWrangler or BBEdit to have a look inside.

What could cause files to grow are track logs.
If you set your GPS device to record a track point every second and include that in the KML, the file can get big.

I just created a KML with 1000 images. No track logs.
It is 1.7MB and compresses down to a 30KB ZIP.

The entry for an individual image should look like this:
<Placemark id="IMG_0191">

Latitude:

01.00000° N

Longitude:

01.00000° E

Timestamp:

6/26/05, 11:35 AM

<Snippet></Snippet>

<styleUrl>#Photo</styleUrl>

<Point>
<altitudeMode>absolute</altitudeMode>

<coordinates>1.00000,1.00000</coordinates>

</Point>
</Placemark>
I have used this software multiple times, for years, for the exact same type of project, and this has never, ever happened.

There are no track logs - just images with embedded geo-data. Another very odd thing - if I out put as KMZ it is much larger. Example 54 MB. Same file saved as KML is 2.6 MB. That MAKES NO SENSE, as KMZ are always smaller (compressed version of KML). :-(

Tried outputting as "google Earth" file VS "KML files"-- both huge.

KML file:

Google Earth file:

Hi!

KMZ files are always larger. These are self-contained: they need to contain the image files. If you enable thumbnails, there will even be 2 image files for each photo.

A KML of 2.6MB is not that big.
Being XML, it actually compresses very well.
You'll probably get a 50KB ZIP file out of it.

The images never used to be self-contained. I need them to point to images on a drive. Why is this happening now??? How can I change this?

My KMZ files have always been smaller - they are compressed versions of KML ) which are the same, just uncompressed). UGH, unless I am losing my mind. Quite possible - It has been a very busy, crazy hard-working month. :-P

I cannot send a client a 180MB KMZ file - I am amazed my box isn't crashing each time I open Google Earth

How can I keep them from being self-contained. This is what I meant by "embedded". How can I have them link to folder on my drive or desktop, like I used to???

Hi!

"KML Export" creates a KML file as well as a folder structure with the images and thumbnails.
The KML file should be relatively small. Say 2MB for 1000 images. 50KB when compressed.
It is your responsibility to keep the images files in a relative position to the KML so Google Earth can find them.

KMZ files created by "Google Earth" export have always been self-contained.
Basically, you get a ZIP file by the name of KMZ that contains all of the above.
Big file. Easy to handle: no risk of breaking relative paths.

To answer your question:
Use "KML Export" rather than "Google Earth" export.
You will get a small, easy to compress KML file.

BTW, this behavior has not changed in years.

Pierre Bernard

Thank you. Honestly never knew the difference between those two, since both just open the files in Google Earth no matter what (as opposed to just saving them to your drive, and letting you open GE when you are ready) Have tried both options here, and both are still huge, but I found if I put a fake "base URL" it at least does not "self-contain" (or whatever) them. I will not be putting these on a server, they have to be on a drive, so will have to take extra steps to go into code and change. May I respectfully suggest adding the option to link them to the folder instead of a base URL? If you do not put in a base URL, you still get the self-contained files, unless I am missing something??? Thanks, and truly sorry if I am missing something. I am under terrible deadline, and cannot seem to get past this in an intuitive fashion. Also, please please add a preference option to sort by file name instead of always defaulting to timestamp.

Hi!

Could you send me a screenshot of your "KML export" settings?

An empty "base URL" should not lead to a KMZ being created.
It should do exactly what you want: a folder with a KML file sitting next to 3 subfolders.

I'll see what I can do about sorting.

Pierre Bernard

Hi!

These settings create a plain KML file.

Please use file:///Volumes/Otter… for base URL. Otherwise HoudahGeo prefixes your path with http://

Hi!

I have a new beta version of HoudahGeo.
You can get it from:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/2381634/HoudahGeo/HoudahGeo3.4.5.zip

This has a hidden settings to have images sorted by name during KML/KMZ export.

To enable the hidden settings:

- Quit HoudahGeo
- Launch /Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app
- Paste in the following tow lines
defaults write com.houdah.houdahGeo kmleSortByName -bool YES
defaults write com.houdah.houdahGeo geSortByName -bool YES
- Hit the Return key
- Launch the new beta of HoudahGeo
