I started with a list of empty folders that I examined manually to make sure they were empty.

Then I tried filtering the original list with size less than "zero", and 1 kb and both excluded all these empty folders. I ended up with a blank list.

Is there a way to find empty folders?

Hi!

I am afraid, this is not a property that Spotlight keeps track off.

Hi again!

Turns out I was wrong.

You can find empty folders by searching for:
- Number of items equal to 0
- Content kind is Folder

This doesn't seem to work in all cases - I suspect .DS_Store files. Any ideas for working around this?

Hi!

No, I have no idea.

Actually I do not know what could be going wrong. Please investigate you idea of .DS_Store files causing this.

it's the .DS_Store file. I've tested it.

A brand new folder that's never been opened will show as empty. Open it, however, and a .DS_Store file is created and the formula described above won't show it as empty because the file count isn't zero.

Oddly, file count = 1 won't work, either.

Hi!

I have verified this myself: the .DS_Store file is accounted for by Spotlight. A folder with only a .DS_Store file is not found by a "Number of items" = 0 search. It is however matched by a "Number of items" = 1 search.

I will report a bug to Apple. You may do the same at bugreport.apple.com

Since upgrading to Mavericks I can't find empty folders any more using the search criteria described above. Number of Items = 0, even without any invisible files, doesn't seem to work.

Hi!

Indeed Spotlight on Mavericks reports a value of 1 for "Number of Items" (kMDItemFSNodeCount) for all folders.

I will report the bug to Apple.
