Is it possible to find specific types of files using HoudahSpot? For example: I have a bunch of InDesign files on an external drive... I'd like to get them all together.

How do I search for them by filetype?

Warmly,

Millard

Hi!

Sure there is. The easiest way is "find by example": Drag a InDesign file onto a Content Kind criterion row. Drop it anywhere but on a text field. The criterion will adapt to match the file.

Do you have a screenshot of that place in the program... I have tried it, but cannot find the place to put it.

Hi!

I have attached a screenshot of me dragging the HoudahGeo.txt file onto a criterion row.

Thank you!

That was EXACTLY what I needed... found ALL the files on the external drive with this tip!

Cheers,

Whenever I drag a file onto the content kind bar it just defaults to content type and does not use the 3 letter file type code that I want to search by.

Also how do I specify a hidden folder to search in, for example /private/var ??

The only reason I would purchase this software is to do things I CANNOT do with finder.

Hi!

Content types use reverse DNS notation. E.g. "com.apple.iwork.pages.sffpages" for a Pages document.

If you wish to search by file extension, you may use a "Name" "ends with" criterion.

To add a hidden folder to the search scope:
- Select "Other…" from the menu in a scope ("Where…") row
- Press cmd-shift-G
- Enter the folder path. E.g. "/private/var"
- Click Go. Click Select

You might want to store the resulting search as a template. Or even add folders you frequently search and make it into your Preferred Template.

Pierre Bernard

Speaking of things you can do with HoudahSpot, but not with the Finder:

- Search multiple locations
- Exclude locations
- Add arbitrary columns. Use those for sorting
- Text Preview
- Find by example
- Templates. Preferred Template
- File tagging
- …
