There is a bug in Google Earth 4.3. It fails to correctly display KMZ files. The Windows version is not affected.

The first placemark description balloon to be opened displays correctly. Further placemarks no longer load images. Returning to the first placemark, it is still displayed correctly.

Workarounds:

1. This bug affects KMZ files only. Rename your *.kmz file to *.zip and decompress it. Now you can open the HoudahGeo.kml file located within the newly created folder. You may also use HoudahGeo to create KML files with no base URL.

2. Upgrade to Google Earth 5.0 BETA or downgrade to Google Earth 4.2. Either version works fine for viewing KMZ files.

Hello,

Confrirm Beta Google Earth responds as you describe however fix described doesnot work, or I am doing something wrong.

I rename the file HoudahGeo.zip and accept change.

When I double click the file I get HoudahGeo.zip.cpgz

Double clicking this produces HoudahGeo 2.zip

What am I doing wrong.

There is no new folder as decribed in your workaround.

Please assist.

Hi!

It seems like your system is not correctly configured to open ZIP files. Please make sure ZIP files are set to open using /System/Library/CoreServices/Archive\ Utility.app

Hi,

Thanks for responding so quickly.

Solved he problem.

Had to export the file as Google Earth from the menu which is really export to google earth file. Which is a little ambigious for a novice to your programme.

I also found that I had to save the data and open again t re-export any changes.

Otherise love the programme and will be great on my site and used extensively on my trips to the States in my RV.

Hello, I am a new user of HoudahGeo (Vs. 2.0.2 (2024)).

I just tried to export geotagged pictures into Google Earth (Vs. 5.0.11337.1968 (beta)). However, when I open Google Earth, it shows me the track but not my pictures, just the little question mark icon.

I can do the workaround via a zip file and I can see the pictures.

However, the slideshow function does not work either way. A slider shows up in the top right corner of Google Earth but the date is stuck toJan 31, 2009 4:00pm.

What am I doing wrong? Your last post stated that this error was fixed with Google Earth 5...

Hope someone can help!

Hi!

Do your photos have "spaces" in their names?

This bug was fixed in HoudahGeo 2.1. Please update your copy.

Thanks Pierre! Yes my file names have spaces in them and updating to 2.1 helped. On a site note, I was wondering why HoudahGeo did not alert me of the update although I have it set to check for updates automatically. Not a big deal, but I had to go in and do the search for an update manually.

Can not confirm, that the problem is solved. Still a KMZ-File shows in 5.x same buggy behaviour like in 4.x!

Hi!

I think the problem you are seeing is caused by the umlauts in the image file names.

I'll see to find a workaround for this limitation.

Pierre Bernard

Ok, if I avoid Umlaute, the file will work as expected, TX!

Hi!

Word of caution: Google Earth 5 currently does not work well with KMZ files that have umlauts in their name or path.

When I send an email of a tour, the images have no content.

Hi!

Emailing from within Google Earth may cause images to get lost.

Please use HoudahGeo's "Google Earth Export" feature to create a KMZ file. Select the file in the Finder or in your favorite Email client and proceed to attach it to an email.
