Hi;
I just installed HoudahGeo. I ma using Holux m-241 logger to ceate gps data.
After installing SLAB_USBtoUART HoudahGeo import gps data from Holux very well.
But if I quite HoudahGeo and start a new session SLAB_USBtoUART no longer works. I need to re-install SLAB_USBtoUART from scratch, re-start my MacBookPro, and then it works well again.
Is there a way to make SLAB_USBtoUART work everytime once installed?
I use MacBookPro with i7 processor and Mountain Lion 10.8.2
Thanks
Rich

Hi!

The driver should not require re-installation.

I have not used the SLAB_USBtoUART driver in quite some time. But I remember it as being very reliable.

Could you please check /Applications/Utilities/Console.app > All Messages for messages from the driver or from kext (kernel extension) loading?

Hi Pierre;

Attached is a copy of Console listing from time when I had problem with Silab driver.
Is there anything that can let you see what is the problem?

Hi Rich,

Unfortunately this does not reveal much to me.
The developers of the driver will have a better understanding of these messages.

At first sight there don't seem to be any serious error messages.
It is just the timeout on setPowerState which could hint at a problem.

Sorry I cannot be of more help.

Have you tried switching your track logger off and back on rather than rebooting the Mac?
Have you tried activating Bluetooth on the track logger? For some devices this actually helps the USB connection.

Hi Pierre;

Thanks for quick response.

I did not try turning on and off the logger.I will try this later.
But I tried Bluetooth pairing with my Mac. It is paired but HoudahGeo does not see the logger. In Mac Bluetooth control panel I can see that Holux logger is paired and connected, but HoudahGeo does not see it.
So pairing Bluetooth did not seem to help with my problem.

Thanks

Hi Rich,

I did not actually mean you should connect to the track logger via Bluetooth.
I always prefer the USB connection. It is faster and more reliable.

All I wanted to suggest is to keep Bluetooth active on the track logger while using the USB connection.

If you want to use Bluetooth to transfer track logs, you need to find the device's serial port name.
This is listed in System Preferences > Bluetooth > Advanced.

Hi Pierre;

I thing I tried everything but nothing works. Only way to make Holux to work with HoudahGeo is to reinstall silabs driver each time I want to down load gps tracks.
Bloutooth does not work, no matter what address i enter.
I tired MTK preset. There is no problem with the driver but after connecting to Holux id download two bogus gps track from 2008 time frame.
I tried to download from SiLabs VCP driver but it did not help.

Are there any other drivers than SiLabs? Do you have any idea how to make it work?

I just thought one thing, I will try HoudahGeo on different laptop MacBookAir instead of current MacBookPro.

Thanks

Hi Pierre;

As I mentioned before I tried MacBookAir with HoudahGeo and Holux with silab driver and works no problems at all. It works with USB and Bluetooth.
So there must be some software conflict o my MacBookPro. Both laptops use the same version of Mountain Lion. Only MacBookAir has Core 2 due microprocessor and MacBookPro has i7 processor.
Are you aware of any software conflicts with silab driver or HoudahGeo?

Thanks

Hi!

Please try running the free EtreCheck.

This will point you to third party extensions installed on your system.

Hi Rich!

I noticed two things:

- You are running version 2.9 of the SILabs driver. The latest is 3.0
- The geotate katomount launch daemon caught my attention. I cannot find a matching download

Hi Pierre;

Thanks for working with to fix the problem
I reinsalled silab to version 3.0 and now my Holux connects to HoudahGeo using USB with no problem, do not need to re-install silab driver every time.

But Bluetooth connection still does not work on MacBookPro, while it works on MacBookAir. It is not important for me that it works but the difference is interesting.

Thanks

Hi Pierre;

I forgot one thing, in your last response you mention geotate katomount. I used to use JOBOphoto gps, maybe it is from that install.
Do you know how to remove geotate katomount? I saw in in Launch Daemons, but it does not appear in startup items.

Thanks

Hi Rich,

Glad to hear you got the driver working.

LaunchDaemons are configured using PLIST files which tell the system which executable to launch.
You could inspect the file, see which files it points to and the remove that file as well as the PLIST.

It would however be more prudent to find the appropriate uninstaller for the software which installed this.

Hi Pierre;
I was declaring victory too soon. After initial indication silab driver may be working, next day it return to the same problem, I need to re-install for it to work.
So geotata was not a cause of problem. It may be some other conflict.

Do you have any other ideas what may cause the conflict on my MacBookPro?

Thanks

Hi Rich,

I am sorry, I have run out of ideas.

Have you tried asking SiLabs?
The driver logs the following message: setPowerState(0 -> 1) timed out after 10154 ms
Maybe they know what could be causing this.

Hi Pierre;

I asked SiLabs and they say that SLAB_USBtoUART does not support Mountain Lion Mac Osx. So this explains the problem.
They are working on update.

Thanks for you help and patience.
