Hi!

Please check /Applications/Utilities/Console.app for error messages.

Please use /Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor.app to generate a "Sample Process" for the HoudahSpotHelper process.

I am also triailing Houdaspot and the houdahspothelper process often takes over the CPU (up to 50%) for extended period of time.

Makes the software unusable unfortunately.

Attached is a process sample of the run away process.

Hi!

Sorry HoudahSpotHelper is causing you trouble.

The Sample output is quite surprising. It seems you caught HoudahSpotHelper in the process of sliding out the Tray.

Did you try revealing the Tray just prior to grabbing the Sample?
Was the Tray still usable after taking that Sample?

Pretty sure the tray was stored away and I was just browsing when I took the sample.

In any case the high CPU was on for extended period of time so I can't imagine it be normal for the tray o take this long to be stored away?

Hi!

No, it is certainly not normal.
I was to see you caught the Tray in the process of sliding in.

I will investigate under which situations the Tray does slide in automatically.

HoudahSpot and HoudahSpotHelper have separate preferences files.
HoudahSpotHelper watches HoudahSpot's preferences file and updates its own when it sees a change.

I believe there is some automatic Tray sliding join on as preferences are updates.
I wonder if the two files somehow got out of sync and HoudahSpotHelper ending up attempting updates repeatedly.

Could you please try two things:

1. Grab another Sample. With a little luck we will see what actually triggered the sliding in of the Tray
2. Try quitting (or killing) both HoudahSpot and HoudahSpotHelper. Then trash both of their preferences files to give the syncing a fresh start.

You can reach the preferences files by holding down the option key as you select Library from the Go menu in the Finder.
Then navigate to the Preferences folder within Library.
The two files are com.houdah.HoudahSpot.plist and com.houdah.HoudahSpotHelper.plist

I have actually planned a bug fix release for HoudahSpot for next week.
I hope to be able to address this issue with that update.

Pierre Bernard
