Is there any way to search for password encrypted PDF-documents?

HoudahSpot relies on the text being available in the Spotlight index. The content of encrypted PDFs is not indexed by Spotlight. Indeed, having an unencrypted copy of the file in Spotlight would defeat the purpose of encrypting the original document

Hi, i didn't wanted to search for the content that is encrypted in PDFs, but for the PDF, which are encrypted. In Metadata this is marked with security (e.g. none OR password encrypted), but when i setup a filter regarding this metadata, all PDFs are found, not only the ones with security: password encrypted. Any thoughts about this?

Check View > Details > Info to see what information is available on a file.

On an encrypted PDF, I see "Security: Password Encrypted". Drag that row from "Info" to "Refine" to make it a "Security Is Password Encrypted" search criterion.

Make sure your criterion is at the top level. Not in a "None" or "Any" group.

That was exactly what i've been doing, but this search always delivers me encrypted PDFs (you really need a password to quicklook them) and not encrypted PDFs, which you can quicklook without typing in a password. But all of them are metadata flagged "Security: Password Encrypted". I want to find all of the PDFs, which need a password to be opened or quicklooked.

There are different levels of protection for PDFs. E.g. one can allow reading but block copy-paste or printing.

I assume that the files you are seeing have such protection enabled. I could imagine that the Spotlight importer for PDF files makes no distinction between the different levels of protection.

That is what i assume, too. After your reply, i did a short test: I tried to delete the enrcyption on those PDFs which i was able to quicklook without typing in a password. Opening these PDFs in Adobe Acrobat and trying to remove the security is not possible without a password. So you`re right with different levels of protection, and Spotlight only see if there is any or none, not which one.

Thanks for your assistance! Close issue.
