I noticed recently that you are now able to drag saved searches from the Finder into the dock as stacks. It would be nice if HoudahSpot could do the same thing with templates since HS has always been better at being able to edit search criteria then the Finder has. Would it be possible to add that feature?

Hi!

You can easily do the same with HoudahSpot documents. But you will be opening and modifying the actual documents.

HoudahSpot templates are plain HoudahSpot documents stored in a special location: ~/Library/Application Support/HoudahSpot/Templates
You may drag that folder to the Dock for quick access.

In the Finder, hold the option key as you select Library from the Go menu. This will reveal your Library folder. From there you can navigate to Application Support/HoudahSpot and grab the Templates folder.

I don't have a HoudahSpot folder under Application Support for some reason.

Could there be a way to access this feature straight from the program? Perhaps using a button in the tool bar that would save the current search criteria as a stack?

Hi!

There must be a HoudahSpot folder. Otherwise you would not see templates in the menu.

Please try this: In the Finder, select Go to Folder… from the Go menu. Paste in the following: ~/Library/Application Support/HoudahSpot

Ok, I see the folder now. I think Apple hides the user library as of 10.8.

The result was a little different then what I would like to have happen. The way a smart stack works normally is clicking on the stack will show you the items with that search criteria directly in the stack. This way you can browse files of a certain criteria without ever having to open a new window. This accomplishes three things:

1. It allows you to easily drag files from the smart stack into whatever document you need to drop it in. No resizing or repositioning windows. As soon as you grab the file in the smart stack the stack collapses so you have room to place it wherever you need.

2. It cuts down on window clutter.

3. It shows you a preview of the files in the search without having to switch to the search application.

Hi!

You can control-click a folder in the Dock to configure how it should be displayed.
You probably want to show as "Fan"

Pierre, when I upgraded to version 4 I noticed that the templates that I made myself no longer showed up in my dock stack like it did with HS 3. Do you know why that is?

Hi!

HoudahSpot 4 has an application support folder separate from the one used by HoudahSpot 3.
The new one is at ~/Library/Application Support/com.houdah.HoudahSpot4

The easiest way to get the Templates folder is through HoudahSpot > Preferences > Templates > Go to Templates Folder

HoudahSpot 4 lets you save templates wherever you want. Templates saved in the default templates folder are listed in the menu and sidebar. Create a subfolder to submenu / group.

You could also set up a new folder with templates and add to the Dock.

BTW, there now is a tool to help you migrate existing templates to HoudahSpot 4.

Ok, so my templates are in another folder then the built in templates. Probably the best way to manage this is to have a different stack for the built in templates and my templates?

You could move your favorite sample templates to the top-level template folder ( ~/Library/Application Support/com.houdah.HoudahSpot4/Templates ) and add that folder to your Dock.

This also gives you the freedom to customize these templates without running the risk of them being overwritten by an update.

The templates inside the "Sample Templates" folder are "owned" by HoudahSpot. HoudahSpot may overwrite these with newer version when an update becomes available.

Pierre Bernard
