Just upgraded to 2.5, and I'm having problems with HoudahSpotHelper hanging, and HoudahSpot taking up large amounts of CPU if I leave it open for a while. Never had any issues with previous version. I trashed both sets of preferences but continue to have the same problems.

I've reverted back to 2.4.4 and all is well again.

Troubles here, too. When I open the app, I can't open a Search window, and after about 20 seconds, it simply quits on me. If I reopen and try to change a couple prefs, it quits, as well (I'm guessing it's unrelated to to what I'm doing-- it's probably just bailing after a certain amount of time, regardless of what I'm doing).

Hi!

Do you have any crash reports?

Could you please check Console.app for error messages?

HoudahSpot 2.5 is indeed a major rewrite. Much of the inner workings have been replaced. To account for this, HoudahSpot 2.5 has been in beta testing for quite some time. Nonetheless some issues might have slipped through.

I've had trouble with HoudahSpot crashing regularly ever since I bought it (at 2.0 not just since 2.5).

I send crash reports, but sometimes even Crash Reporter will crash as it's about to send them.

@sfkeydel

Please check if you have the following file: /System/Library/DTDs/sdef.dtd
If not please drop in the attached file.

@jono

I am aware of the crash reports you sent in. Unfortunately, the crash reporter always reports not having been able to find an actual crash report. Thus I end up with an empty file.

I still cannot figure out why the crash reporter fails locating the report or why HoudahSpot crashes on your machine but not on other customers' machines.

During the beta test period for 2.5 I asked you to manually look for a crash report, but there indeed was none. So I wonder what prevents the writing of the crash reports. I meant to ask you to check write rights on the crash report directory. I believe I actually forgot asking.

That would however not explain the crashing. Yet crash reports are the only way I could ever diagnose this.

I would strongly suggest you install the open source AppleJack maintenance tool and run "applejack AUTO restart" in single user mode. With a little luck this will fix the underlying problem.

Pierre Bernard

Thanks Pierre, I'll give Applejack a try.

When I say HoudahSpot crashes, it doesn't actually crash but stops responding. I see that it's not responding in Activity Monitor and have to force quit it.
If it helps I could run Sample Process from Activity Monitor, but I'll try Applejack first.

Hi Pierre,

I didn't have that file, so I inserted the downloaded file into the proper location; unfortunately, I'm still seeing the same behavior.

Here are the console messages from just now:
5/25/09 12:13:04 PM HoudahSpot[199] *** -[NSCFArray objectAtIndex:]: index (0) beyond bounds (0)
5/25/09 12:13:16 PM HoudahSpot[199] An exception was thrown during execution of an NSScriptCommand...
5/25/09 12:13:16 PM HoudahSpot[199] *** -[NSCFArray objectAtIndex:]: index (0) beyond bounds (0)
5/25/09 12:13:16 PM HoudahSpotHelper[201] Apple event returned an error. Event = 'core'\'crel'{ 'kocl':'docu', 'insh':'insl'{ 'kobj':'obj '{ 'want':'docu', 'from':'null'(), 'form':'indx', 'seld':'abso'($206C6C61$) }, 'kpos':'end ' } }
Error info = {
ErrorNumber = -10000;
}
5/25/09 12:14:08 PM HoudahSpot[199] *** -[NSCFArray objectAtIndex:]: index (0) beyond bounds (0)
5/25/09 12:14:23 PM HoudahSpot[199] *** -[NSCFArray objectAtIndex:]: index (0) beyond bounds (0)

I should note that I restarted after inserting the file.

Stefan

Hi Stefan,

I can't seem to put the pieces of the puzzle together.

The console output seems to indicate that HoudahSpotHelper (global menu item, BlitzSearch) asked HoudahSpot to create a new document. HoudahSpot ran into an error when doing so.

Were you using BlitzSearch when the crash occurred? What were the exact parameters?

Please verify that you only have one copy of HoudahSpot on your system HoudahSpot and HoudahSpotHelper of different versions don't mix well.

E.g. if you have HoudahSpot 2.5 installed, you should also see the "Any Text" option in the BlitzSearch window.

Upgraded to 2.5 to, HS just does nothing.

It searches with a spinning wheel, then the wheel disappears but there is still "searching" in the blue bar but nothing happens.

Tried the "sdef.dtd", no result.

Is there a link to a previous version?

Thanks,
Lars

/edit: Fould a 2.4.4 with google. But you should offer previous versions on your website.

Hi Lars!

Sorry to hear you are having problems.

HoudahSpot 2.4.4 is still available [URL=http://www.houdah.com/houdahSpot/updates/cast2_assets/HoudahSpot%202.4.4.zip]here[/URL]. Downgrading however is only a temporary solution.

Could you please send me a screenshot of the search which fails to produce results?
Is the problem limited to certain searches or does it extend to all searches?

Are you able to use Activity Monitor to run a process sample on HoudahSpot while it displays a blank result list?

P.S: Please make sure to only have one version of HoudahSpot installed on your system. Otherwise you are bound to run into trouble using the global menu and BlitzSearch features.

Pierre Bernard

OK, after running Applejack HoudahSpot didn't work at all for me either.

It wouldn't create a new search and if I opened an existing search the boxes where you enter text were missing. But after adding the sdef.dtd file it now works again.

Still hasn't stopped HoudahSpot crashing regularly for me though. I guess I'll send some samples from Activity Monitor.

Still getting problems with HoudahspotHelper hanging with the latest version 2.5.1. When I try to bring up a query window with my hot key combo, the helper hangs. It unhangs itself after a couple of minutes. Here's an extract from the Console....

Hi!

The console messages show HoudahSpot crashing.

Aren't you offered the option to submit crash reports?

No, I'm not offered any option to send a crash report. I've gone back to 2.4.4 again, which is still working for me with no issues.
