Hi,

I have one of these devices and it works pretty sweetly. However, the supplied software sucks so badly that it's painful. I was wondering if it might be possible to add support for this device?

Hi!

Thanks for your interest in HoudahGeo.

HoudahGeo works from track log files (GPX, NMEA, CSV, ...). Are you able to extract such a file out of your JOBO track logger?

Hi,

Unfortunately not. It doesn't save out to those formats, instead it is read in "real-time" when the device is connected up to the software, it then matches those gps captures against the date/time stamps on the photos. It does appear to give an option to backup those imports into a .sdf which I believe is Sunato format, but I'm not sure if it's a valid format since GPSBabel doesn't like it.

I thought I would describe my workflow at the moment:

I use Lightroom v2 to import all my images from my digital camera into respective folders. I then use JOBO PhotoGPS software to go thru each image and tag them with the GPS coordinates it has retrieved from the device. I then go back into Lightroom to do any editing.

The JOBO PhotoGPS software is a bit crap however. You can't be selective in what photos to tag, can play around with the GPS coordinates and just feels flakey. I would perfer to use Houdah to do it for me...i.e., read in the information from the device directly and allow me to tag images plus make any modifications I need to make.

Here's hoping that a solution can be found to abandon the PhotoGPS software.

Hi!

Does it read "real-time" only or is there a way to get some kind of file out of the device or the bundled software?

Hi,

It appears to read the GPS information in real-time into the supplied propriety software. The software does have the ability to "backup" the read information. It stores this information as .sdf files which appear to be suunato files, but in reality I'm not sure about that fact since I tried to open up the .sdf file using GPSBabel and it failed to read the file, so I can't convert these to any usable format for Houdah to use.

It would be neat if I could import diretly from the device using Houdah, i.e., select PhotoGPS from GPS Device Type so that Houdah go manage it for me. However, thinking about this, it may not be possible to do.

May I point you to this file:

This is the product I use:

Hello,

Any news regarding this? Since the product itself (Jobo photoGPS is great, but the software not) - I can attach an sample data file what photoGPS produces.

Would like to use some way much better software for geotagging and HoudahGeo looks very nice

Thanks

Hi!

It appears that it should be rather easy to support Suunto SDF files. I will try to verify that.

Attached is sample SDF file, what Jobo photoGPS produces. Hope it helps.

That would be so sweet if it could. However, be aware that BabelGPS failed to open the Suunto GPS file (even although it appeared to be in the format!)

Have you any further info regarding the possible use of Houdahgeo with the jobo. I am considering the purchase and would like to know.
thanks,
john

Hi!

I am in discussions with the company providing the technology behind the Jobo.

Thing is, the Jobo is not a full-fleged GPS track logger. Rather than recording your position, it records satellite signals. Later a database of past satellite positions is needed to figure out positions from the recorded data.

Any progress in cracking the Jobo photoGPS SDF file?

I have confirmed that it is neither an ASCII file, nor Suunto SDF file. It must be a proprietary format of Jobo or Geotate, and is not friendly to open-source community.

Thanks a lot.

Hi!

JOBO is not a full blown GPS device. It does not compute your current position. It rather records satellite positions from which custom software can later compute positions by referring to data on their servers.

I own the Bilora device, which is very similar to the Jobo and I believe generates the same type of files (.sdf)
The associated software from Bilora is (from what I can read) identical to the Jobo software and is next to useless.
It would be nice to be able to use the generated data in a software such as HoudahGeo. Any progress on this issue
I believe that both devices are using U-Blox servers to retrieve the actual positionning data
Thank you for your answer

Hi!
Jobo PhotoGPS software will not work anymore: http://www.jobo.com/support?ecms_lang=EN
After more than 5 years...any news about Houdah compatibility or did someone here find alternative solutions?

Thank you for your answer.

Hi!

I don't think there is a way to use the data without having access to the server software and database used to compute actual GPS positions from the raw data.
