*** UPDATE: HoudahGeo 2.9.1 fixes the issue discussed below.
*** Workarounds should no longer be needed

HoudahGeo 2.9 is needed for Mac OS X 10.7 Lion compatibly.

A few users have however reported problems with launching the HoudahGeo application: the icon will bounce in the Dock, yet the application never launches.

Initial analysis of the problem traces it back to the WebKit icon cache. This can be fixed by trashing the icon cache at ~/Library/Icons

Please use the following procedure:

1. Option-click the "Go" menu in the Finder
2. Select the "Library" option from the menu. This opens the Library folder in your home directory
3. Locate the "Icons" folder within "Library"
4. Trash the "Icons" folder

HoudahGeo should now be able to launch just fine.

Please report back whether this workaround has worked for you or not.

Best,
Pierre Bernard

Hi!

Please try the following:

1. Select "Go to Folder…" from the "Go" menu in the Finder
2. Enter "~/Library/Icons"

This should take you to the Icons folder.

Hi!

Several users have reported success with the following obscure procedure:

1. Delete the ~/Library/Preferences/com.houdah.HoudahGeo.plist file. In Lion Finder you need to option-click the Go menu to see the Library option
2. Log into another user account. Create one if needed.
3. Launch HoudahGeo there
4. HoudahGeo should now work again under your normal account

I cannot explain why this works. Please report back whether this worked for you or not,

Best,
Pierre Bernard

Ok, done, but inside the Icon folder I only find a WebpageIcons.db file.

However it seems to me a little strange to be obliged to create a new account to allow to work a software that in his webpage is ensured to working with Lion..I hope in a new working release soon.

Hi!

Please try trashing the WebpageIcons.db file. That's where WebCore stores icons.

The account the procedure asks you to create is temporary only. Users report HoudahGeo to be working on the main account after going through the procedure. The temporary account may then be deleted.

Unfortunately, I cannot currently offer a conclusive explanation why HoudahGeo fails to launch for some users. Nor can I explain why the above workaround miraculously fixes the issue.

If you would like to help getting the problem diagnosed, please do the following:

1. Check /Applications/Utilities/Console.app for error messages as you try to launch HoudahGeo

2. Please check ~//Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports and /Library/Logs/CrashReporter for crash logs from HoudahGeo

3. While HoudahGeo tries to launch, use /Applications/Utilities/Activity Monotor.app to do a "Sample Process" to see what HoudahGeo is up to.

Even if the problem is now solved, it may be useful to let you know that the issue was not strictly related to Lion. Yesterday I had the same problem with Snow Leopard (after last Apple updates) and solved it by trashing the WebpageIcons.db file.

I had the same issue.  I deleted the ~/Library/Icons folder and was able to launch the program.

<strike>However I have a different issue.  When I try to load my gpx file it hangs saying "Loading 1 track log file(s) ...".  As far as I can tell there's nothing wrong with the GPX file.  I tried loading a known good GPX file (one that worked before) and I have the same problem.</strike>

Disregard!  I wasn't running the latest version.  I downloaded the latest and it works fine.
