I've loaded images from Aperture into Houdah Geo using the library browsing widget.  I've set their geographic location using the map feature.  I've saved the co-ordinates to the images (EXIF/XMP/IPTC).

I can find no evidence of GPS / co-ordinate information in the photos when I open in Aperture or Aperture3 or iPhoto 9.  But if I re-open the images in HoudahGeo I can see the co-ordinates I saved to the images.

I'm using 2.4.4 and I have unticked the create copies and always write to XMP options.

I'm obviously doing something wrong - but can't find any indication what it might be.  What do I need to do to get the GPS information attached to the images?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi!

If photos are already managed by Aperture or iPhoto, you need make sure to "Tag Masters/Originals". For this feature to work, you need to have library pre-loading enabled in HoudahGeo's preferences.

Once you tagged your photos you need to right-click them in Aperture and select "Reload EXIF from file" or "Update Master". If you are running iPhoto'09, HoudahGeo will offer to notify iPhoto of the new metadata.

P.S: I have not yet tested XMP sidecar support in Aperture 3. Neither Aperture 2 nor iPhoto support sidecars. That's why the documentation recommends against using sidecars. If you find Aperture 3 not to be able to read GPS data from the sidecars, you will need to use the Finder to remove the XMP sidecars before proceeding.

Thanks for the speedy reply.

Reloading the EXIF attributes worked OK in Aperture 2, but doesn't seem to work at all in Aperture 3 (or at least my trial copy thereof).  Maybe this because of the trial limitations...?  In Aperture 3 reloading the EXIF seems to delete the GPS info from the master...

Hi!

The appropriate command in Aperture 3 is named "Update from Master". This works fine for reading GPS data.

Please make sure you tag masters and don't have XMP sidecars around.

OK - that's what I tried.  I guess it doesn't work with the trial version for some reason.  Thanks for the info.

Hi!

I would be really surprised if this was a limitation of the trial version.

Does the media browser within HoudahGeo correctly show your Aperture library?

What file is revealed when you press "Reveal Master in Finder" in the HoudahGeo Inspector panel?

Are your images stored within the Aperture library or references external files?

Sorry to dig up an old topic, but I am having the same problem of the GPS data not showing up in Aperture.  I have tried the steps that you suggested, but am still not able to see the data.  When I use an exif viewer, it seems that HoudahGeo is updating the preview image, but not the master image (even though Tag masters is selected).  Any thoughts?  Thanks for the great program (I am using Version 2.5.6).

Hi!

Are you using Aperture 3?
Did HoudahGeo ask about notifying Aperture?

For "Tag Masters/Originals" to work, you need to have Aperture library pre-loading enabled in HoudahGeo's preferences.

You also need to have the sharing of previews with iLife/iWork enabled in Aperture's preferences.

Thanks for the quick reply.  Yes, I am using the latest version of Aperture 3.

I do not recall HoudahGeo asking to notify Aperture.

The pre-loading is enabled in
HoudahGeo and sharing of previews is enabled as well.

Any other thoughts?

Thanks!

Hi!

Please verify that HoudahGeo is able to find the master files:

1. Open the media browser in HoudahGeo
2. Find an image managed by Aperture, drag it into a HoudahGeo project
3. Select the image in the project and open the Inspector window
4. Click "Reveal Master in Finder"

Does this point to the master or the preview?

If this does find the masters, please read this.

Progress!

I have both RAW and jpg images and in Aperture I have jpg set as master.  It appears that HoudahGeo is writing the gps data to the raw file, but is not writing it to the jpg file as well (which is why it is not showing up in Aperture, when I switch to RAW as master the gps data is there).  Is there a way for HoudahGeo to write the data to both the RAW and jpg?

Thanks Again!

Hi!

I understand your camera is shooting RAW and JPEG at the same time. You imported both into Aperture.

That's a situation I have not yet considered. I believe that's a new option in Aperture 3.

Could you email me such a pair of images so I can test this?

Pierre Bernard
