I must be missing something really obvious here, because it seems like I cannot get the None Groups to work properly. For example, I have 4 files:

orange-a-2008.xls
orange-b-2008.xls
banana-a-2011.xls
banana-b-2011.pdf

I see how to display just the orange files by just doing, for example:

All of the following are true: Name contains orange.

However, I am interested to know why the banana files are not displayed when I use the following command:

None of the following is true: Name contains orange

Instead, I get no files found. If I understand the None Group correctly, shouldn't that exclude the orange files from the list and display all the others?

Thanks,

Hi!

Yes, you understand None Groups correctly.

Were there any other criteria?

I tried to keep it as simple as possible. In the attached

First, the orange search works, shown in houdah-1.jpg.

Banana works, as shown in houdah-2.jpg.

HOWEVER, I would have thought that houdah-3.jpg would also show the banana files, but instead, I get no results.

Where am I going wrong?

Thanks!

Hi!

Could you please check Windows > Show Query Inspector?
I want to see if the query came out correct.

I have set up a folder with the files as described in your first message. I get the correct results.

Right now, I don't see why you are getting different results.

Best,
Pierre Bernard

Sure, here is the Query Inspector, as requested.

Thanks for looking into this promptly.

Hi!

The query is correct.

Can you send a screenshot of the full window?

Hi!

Two things come to mind:

1. Please try changing the "Limit…" to "Recently Modified". Files that were never opened don't show up when using "Recently Opened".

2. You seem to be on Snow Leopard whereas I am using Lion. I will now go test the same search on Snow Leopard.

Pierre Bernard

Hi!

This is getting interesting. Maybe a bit too much so.

I tested the query on Leopard and Snow Leopard. This had me discover an unrelated bug: the results include the folder being searched. E.g. ~/Desktop/Houdah

Otherwise the result was correct. It found the two "banana" files.

OK, I changed the Limit to Recently Modified and got the same result, attached. Click image for larger version - Name: houdah-9.jpg, Views: 2, Size: 49.11 KB

I should perhaps then try to delete and rebuild my Spotlight index?

Hi!

That would indeed have been my next suggestion.

OK, I re-indexed and now the None Group works as shown in the attached image. Other than the computer being sluggish (perhaps because the indexing still seems to be in progress), the None exclusions are working just as expected.

Thanks for your help!
