When I export a PDF from InDesign then go over to check it's tags in HoudahSpot nothing comes up. Only when I access the file by other means (like clicking on it in the Finder) does it show up in HoudahSpot. This is quite a problem as I export a lot of PDFs from InDesign.

Hi!

I am not sure I understand correctly: does the file exported from InDesign fail to show in HoudahSpot and then appear once you open it from the Finder?

Please try changing the "Limit…" in HoudahSpot from "Recently Opened" to "Recently Modified". With "Recently Opened", files that have never been opened are excluded.

Yes, I don't even have to open the file sometimes just click the file once does the trick.

Still didn't work. I then found the file in the finder and dragged it over to the HoudahSpot Tray to check it's tags. When I did that it showed up in HS.

Hi!

Are you searching by tags?
Is it only searches by tags where the file is not showing?
What tool are you using to tag the file?

Pierre Bernard

I am searching by tags and I am tagging the file using default folder x which is what I use to tag almost all my files.

Hi!

My guess is that the tags are not immediately indexed by Spotlight.
It notices the tags only once you touch the file, Spotlight indexing kicks in and then the file shows in HoudahSpot.

You could verify that assumption by using Spotlight to search for the file. Assign a very unlikely tag (e.g. asdasdae) and then search for that in Spotlight/Finder.

I guess what I would like to know is why when I tag an indesign file or an image file that file will show up immediately in HS but when I export a PDF it works differently? I don't understand why there would be any difference with a PDF. Does a recentely created and tagged PDF from InDesign show up in HS on your computer?

Hi!

I don't have Default Folder X to try tagging and my InDesign demo version is about to expire.

What I did try is export a PDF from InDesign and search for it by name. It showed up immediately.

Hence I think the problem is with tagging the file.

That would be a bit of a problem since I always search by tag rather then name. Searching by name isn't anywhere near as effective as searching by tag so it would be important for me to continue being able to do that. Default Folder X has a free trial by the way. To my kowledge it is about the only program that lets you apply tags directly from the save as dialog. It may be a good program to buy as I would imagine that many people use it to tag their files.

Hi!

Have you tried using Spotlight or the Finder to search for the file by tag?

This would show if the file is correctly tagged.

No, the PDF exported from InDesign does not show up in spotlight either. I made an interesting / odd discovery. I went to export the file exactly the same way I did in the past except this time I exported it as a jpeg rather then a PDF and it came up just fine in both HS and spotlight. I wonder why choosing PDF as the format of the file is dropping the tags?

Hi!

Unfortunately my InDesign trial has expired. Thus I can no longer test this.

Have you asked the developers of Default Folder X if they can think of an explanation?

Best,
Pierre Bernard

That would make sense to do as the problem doesn't appear to be unique to HS. I will ask the people at Default Folder X what they think.
