Hello,

Thank you very much for this such great software and such great reactivity.

This morning, I was tagging pictures I took yesterday in the city I am living (Paris), and was a bit bored about the data given by GeoNames and Google Maps. In fact, GeoNames and Google Maps don't give the same informations, and GeoNames often give the Area of interest name rather than the City name.

Example 1, lat=48.875500&lng=2.378150
GeoNames : France, Ile-de-France, Belleville
Google Maps : France, Ile-de-France, Paris

In fact, it's more like :
France (Country), Ile-de-France (Province), Paris (City), Belleville (Area of interest)

Example 2, lat=48.678120&lng=2.153640 :
GeoNames : France, Ile-de-France, Montjay
Google Maps : France, Ile-de-France, Gometz-le-Châtel

In fact, it's more like :
France (Country), Ile-de-France (Province), Gometz-le-Châtel (City), Parc de Montjay (Area of interest)

Example 3, lat=64.679150&lng=-19.266610
GeoNames : Icelande, Sudur-Tingeyjarsysla, Reykjahlíð
Google Maps : Icelande, Norðurland Eystra, nothing

In fact, it's more like :
Icelande (Country), Norðurland Eystra (Province), Sudur-Tingeyjarsysla (County), Reykjahlíð (City), and why not Myvatn (Area of interest)

Actually, we can define Country, Province and City, with HoudahGeo which is interesting, but quite unsufficiant to my opinion. I think it would be really more than interesting to be abble to define County and Area of Interest (and why not Point of interest) to provide more informations and the point where the pictures were taken.

A last example I would give about the Eiffel Tower :

Country : France
Province : Ile-de-France
City : Paris
Area of Interest : Champ de Mars
Point of interest : Eiffel Tower

So...

Cheers,
Pascal.

Hi!

Thanks for the feedback. Indeed reverse geocoding services and databases vary in approach and quality. They also tend to have different behaviors for different countries. E.g. most produce inaccurate results for the UK.

Unfortunately, I know of no service that's able to recognize areas of interest. I would guess that Apple has augmented Google's service with a database of their own for use in iPhoto'09.

Google's results for the Eiffel Tower look like this: http://maps.google.com/maps/geo?q=48.858193,2.294834

Hello,

I understand that no service is actually able to recognize AOI, but maybe would it be possible to let HoudahGeo users define them ? I mean, as it is actually possible to define manually the other entries, I may be possible to add the entries in the application, and let users use them or not.
Hope I am more clear.

Pascal

Hi!

I will check if there is a place in EXIFT/IPTC to store such information.
