Hi,

I am having a problem if I try to install the HoudahSpot icon in the Finder using the Advanced Preferences button "Install HoudahSpot in Finder toolbar". Funny thing is that it works fine on a MacBook Pro with OS X 10.5.8, but fails on a MacPro with 10.5.8. Finder does relaunch like it should, and there are no messages in the log files (other than the normal Finder hangup message when it's relaunched as a result), but the icon never appears in the Finder. Have tried it in version 2.5.6 and version 2.5.7 with the same result.

I tried to manually edit the com.apple.finder.plist file and put the same info from the working MacBook and that works fine, and the icon is there and fires up HoudahSpot, but trying to do this in the HoudahSpot Advanced preferences fails. Does anyone know how this is actually done within HoudahSpot? I think I saw in some other post that it's done via an AppleScript program, but couldn't find anything that looked like like a candidate in the HoudahSpot.app folder tree.

Any ideas what the problem might be? Or where the actual AppleScript program is that modifies the com.apple.finder.plist file?

Thanks.

-Bob

Hi!

Sorry, I have never encountered this problem.

The preferences file is modified using PListBuddy. In past versions of HoudahSpot this could fail as some systems lack PListBuddy. More recently, PListBuddy comes bundled with HoudahSpot.

Do you know if there is a file containing the AppleScript code that gets run when you click on the "Install HoudahSpot in Finder Toolbar" button in the Advanced options of the HoudahSpot preferences dialog box? Of if not in a file where is it?

I am thinking if I can try and run this AppleScript code by hand that I might see an error occur that would give a hint as to what the real problem is.

In fact, is this actually done with an AppleScript program or ???

Thanks...

Hi!

It is not AppleScript. It is Objective-C code calling into the command line tool PListBuddy.

Actually errors should be reported to the user. You may want to check Console.app if there any errors listed there.

No errors in console - do you know the exact PlistBuddy terminal commands that get run to add the HoudaySpot button to the finder window? I see the man page for it, but without knowing exactly what its trying to do, cant give any more input as to what the problem might be. Thanks...

Well I just removed the application and the preferences files and reinstalled it and now everything seems to work. Should have tried this in the first place I suppose, but up until today have had no problem using the program.

So problem solved.

Thanks for the help.

Hi!

The first message says HoudahSpot cannot find HoudahSpotHelper. HoudahSpotHelper is in charge of the HoudahSpot global menu. Do you have that enabled?

The second message is perfectly normal. It reports HoudahSpot killing the Finder as requested.

Yes, I have the global menu enabled.

Any suggestions as to how to install HS in Finder toolbar?

Thanks

Hi!

I would love to see your com.apple.finder.plist preferences file. That could help me understand why this feature is not working for you.

You may also install the item manually. Right-click the HoudahSpot.app bundle and select "Show Package Contents". You will find "Search in HoudahSpot". Drag that to the Finder toolbar.

Hi!

Thanks for sending in that file.

Thing is, I broke this feature for Leopard users when I implemented it for Snow Leopard. I will fix it in the next update.
