I have never had any problem running HoudahGeo with many types of files: many Canon point-and-shoot cameras and my Nikon D80. I have recently hiked with a friend that shoots with a Canon EOS 10D and am now trying to geotag his pictures.

The pictures are loading perfectly in HoudahGeo and the geotagging works perfectly with a GPX file. My problem, however, is when I try to write the exif data back to the files. HoudahGeo gives me the following error:

"One or more of the images were of an unsupported file type. They were skipped."

This error displays when I have "work on original files" checked. If I remove this checkmark, HoudahGeo beachballs when I click to write the tags. I then need to force quit HoudahGeo.

I have then tried using exifTool directly with the files and haven't had any problems fiddling with the timestamps and other tags, so exifTool seems to work fine on these files.

Anybody had this problem before?

Hi!

Could you please email me a sample file?

Please note that Canon has used several RAW formats in the past. Only CR2 is fully supported by HoudahGeo. CRW and Canon's customized TIF formats are not supported.

Ahh I see ...

His 10D produces CRW files.

Is the incompatibility at the HoudahGeo level, or at the exifTool level? I was able to tweak the timestamps manually using exifTool, so I figured since HoudahGeo used exifTool, everything would be OK.

Still want a sample image?

Hi!

The problem lies with the CRW files themselves. They do not provide space for GPS data.

I'll tell my friend Pierre said he should get a new camera!

Thanks for the replies Pierre!
Great support, as always!

Is there a way to make crw-files support gps-features? Can you convert crw to cr2 raw files?

Hi!

No, there is no way to add GPS data to a CRW file.

You may convert your CRW files to Adobe's DNG format and proceed from there.
