Something is pretty wrong for me when importing a large amount of data from my Qstarz XT. The internal gpsbabel step seems to complete, then things run seriously awry...

At this point it is just spinning, has grown to 2.8GB, and I have to kill it.

If I then reopen HoudahGeo and try and add that log from the library, I get into the same state.

I have placed an example "bad" GPX file at:

Hi!

Sorry to hear you are experiencing problems.

I just loaded the track log into HoudahGeo and it worked fine here.

The Console output shows HoudahGeo running out of memory.
Did you have images loaded prior to loading the track log?
How many?

Which version of HoudahGeo are you using?

Best,
Pierre Bernard

I am using HG 2.9.2 on a quad-core i7 iMac with 12GB of RAM - 10.6.7

I am seeing about 600 messages like:

Aug 28 11:59:20 iMac HoudahGeo[3854]: TrackSegment.m:50 Error: stream had too few bytes \n

in the system.log. Are you seeing those? That doesn't see normal to me.

Before it get memory failures, it gets up to about 170 threads and 2.7GB real and 2.95 virtual memory. The other oddity I see is that the track inspector shows all tracks having a single segment - previous successful imports show multiple segments.

Thanks for your help - I would like to clear the memory on the device, but don't want to do so if I can't get a clean import into HG.

Hi!

Please use GPSBabel or the free HoudahGPS to extract a GPX track log file out of your device. This is probably what you did to email me the file.

Having that file, you are free to erase your track logger. You are just breaking the process down to its individual steps. When you ask for HoudahGeo to download from the device, it calls upon GPSBabel to extract the GPX file and then proceeds to load that file.

I am also seeing hundreds of the warning messages. I would not worry about those.

170 threads and almost 3GB of memory is obviously way of the charts. I wonder what HoudahGeo might be up to. That why I was asking if you had any images in the project file. If there are image, HoudahGeo immediately starts geocoding those upon it finished loading the track log.

Have you tried to load the track log from the file you sent me or only directly from the device?

I am actually seeing 1000+ messages on the console. So my guess would be that on your Mac HoudahGeo somehow hangs after the first 600. I.e. halfway through loading the file.

I am, for now, at a loss trying to explain what is happening. I have uploaded a HoudahGeo project file containing the track log to http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2381634/HoudahGeo/jimglidewell.hgeo.zip . You should be able to work from there.

Best,
Pierre Bernard
