Hello,

My "Load track logs from GPS device..." dialog box has lost the USB driver name. It only says "usb:" and so cannot connect my Holux M-241 logger. I haven't figured out how to reset the Name: box.

The Reset button doesn't do anything and I've downloaded and reinstalled the HoudahGeo software and downloaded and reinstalled the USB drivers and so far no luck.

The Bluetooth port works just fine but, I'd rather use the USB port so I can leave bluetooth turned off on both my MacBook and on the GPS device.

Do you have any suggestions for resetting the list of usb driver names?

Thanks,
Scott

Hi!

The device name depends on the driver. I believe the M-241 works with the SILabs driver. The device name for that driver is SLAB_USBtoUART.

Yes, I'm familiar with SLAB_USBtoUART, however, I don't have that option available. My name field is empty (see uploaded screen shot).

BT747 has a menu option to reset the communication list for times like this. Does HoudahGeo offer something similar?

The Reset button doesn't do anything and I've downloaded and reinstalled the HoudahGeo software and downloaded and reinstalled the USB drivers and so far no luck.

Hi!

You may paste the name SLAB_USBtoUART into the field.

The Reset button should reset the name to the default which may or may not be the appropriate name for your setup.

Pretty slick trick. I didn't expect to be able to copy and paste text into a drop-down field. After copying the USB name and clicking on import, I received the following error msg:

Failed to download from GPS device
mtk_logger: This is not a MTK based GPS ! (or is device turned off ?)

I'm using a Holux M-241 logger on a MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard in 64-bit mode.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Scott

Hi!

HoudahGeo and HoudahGPS should support the Holux m-241 by the way of GPSBabel. I however don't have access to a device to test this. But some customers have reported success.

You may want to try GPSBabel at the command line:

/Applications/HoudahGeo.app/Contents/Resources/gpsbabel -t -w -i m241 -f /dev/cu.SLAB_USBtoUART -o gpx -F `date +'%F-%H:%M'`.gpx

I would be interested to see what error message this produces.

Next, I would suggest you try following the instructions for the BT-747 application found at:
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Holux_M-241#.._with_MacOS_X_.28USB.29
http://trick77.com/2009/01/11/bt747-gps-logger-application-with-new-user-interface/

If you get this to work, we know that the drivers are correctly installed and that there is no problem with the device itself.

Please make sure you have the latest firmware from:

Hi!

I just noticed that Holux links to the older 2.1 version of the same driver:

I would suggest you try the newer one first.

Thank you for your suggestions. Following are my results:

Installed the latest USB driver from SiLabs and rebooted

Ran the comand line version of HoudahGeo and received the same error message as the original post

Installed and ran HoudahGPS and received the same error message as the original post

Downloaded and installed the various desktop versions of BT747 and they didn't work - they would not load. That is the software would not load and so I never had a chance to try the M-241 USB connection

Downloaded and installed  In case of trouble with the serial link: BT747 Latest using RxTx 2.2pre2 (RxTx dev version) for Windows 32 & 64 bit, MacOSX, Linux
which loads BT747 version V2.X.1785. This version WILL connect to the M-241 via USB using driver /dev/tty.SLAB_USBtoUART

I've used BT747 to connect to the M-241 before but, it is agonizingly slow and thus the reason I use HoudahGeo instead. However, I download track logs using bluetooth.

I like bluetooth but, my preferred method is USB -  if I could get it to work.

Hi!

I am sorry, I am pretty much out of suggestions.

I have 2 more though:

- Please try booting in 32 bit mode
- Search this forum for other threads regarding the m241. Post there. This way you may reach other users of the m241 who can share their experiences.
