Houdah Spot 3.8 on OS X 10.9

I'm puzzled by this behavior when trying to find hidden (i.e., "dot" files) with HS.

I am using the "File Invisible equal to Yes" criteria and am only seeing a subset of the dot files in my home dir. See attached screen shot.

However, here is a complete list of all the dot files just in my top level home dir:

.CFUserTextEncoding
.DS_Store
.Trash/
.Xauthority
.bash_history
.cache/
.cups/
.dropbox/
.fontconfig/
.gnupg/
.lesshst
.pgpass
.profile*
.rnd
.sh_history
.sqlite_history
.ssh/
.terminfo/
.vim/
.viminfo
.wireshark/
.wireshark-etc/
.xinitrc
.zenmap/
.zenmap-etc/

Why the discrepancy?

Also, nothing is found if I also add, for instance, "Name contains vim". Why?

Finally, why is the pathname not shown in the bottom bar when I select one of these dot files in the results pane?

Hi!

There are many ways to flag files as invisible on Mac OS X. Depending on the method used, Spotlight may or may not index the file.

Your files are all marked as invisible by using the dot prefix. Something else must be going on. Spotlight probably considers some of the files to be system files and thus skips them.

On my Mac running Mavericks, none of the listed files appear in search results. You may have found a way to force Spotlight to index some of the dot files. This was probably done using the mdimport command in Terminal.app. Try repeating that for the other files.

Also, you are asking for "most recently opened files". This has the Spotlight engine sort the results by date last opened and then return the best matches. The catch: if a file, to the knowledge of Spotlight, has never been opened, it will be ignored. Try changing the limit to "most recently modified".

On Mavericks, I can't get mdimport to add .DS_Store or .bashrc to the Spotlight index

Thanks for the quick replies. I'm continuing to poke around.

Hmm... interesting about 10.9's mdimport not being able to add .bashrc.

Great app, btw! I use HS instead of Spotlight every time.
