Hi,
Since migrating to a new Mac many folders and files are no longer found by HoudahSpot (and Spotlight). For example, of the files in my Documents folder only those that have been updated since the migration seem to be found. I guess this is a Spotlight problem, rather than a HoudahSpot problem, but maybe you know of a fix for this type of problem?

Hi!

I would suggest having Spotlight reindex your drive.

The easiest procedure is to add the whole drive to the Privacy tab of Spotlight. Quit System Preferences. Return to the Spotlight preferences and remove the drive from the Privacy tab. Reindexing should begin.

Houdaspot is failing to find many files and folders. In the attached example, Houdaspot found 41 files while a Smart Folder found 293. I have deleted the preference files and rebuilt the spotlight index. Neither action made any difference.

It appears that Houdaspot is searching only my Documents folder and ignoring all the other specified locations. If I specify a single folder where I know a matching file resides, the search results are empty. That folder is on an encrypted disk image, mounted of course.

If I specify the entire system (/), Houdaspot still ignores the mounted disk image. Click image for larger version - Name: houdaspot.jpg, Views: 13, Size: 1.26 MB Click image for larger version - Name: smartfolder.jpg, Views: 11, Size: 876.52 KB

Hi!

Please try specifying "- Local volumes + user home" and "- User-mounted remote volumes".

Could you please verify where the extra files found by the smart folder are located?

I noticed in your screenshot that HoudahSpot found at least one match on the encrypted disk image.

No change when specifying remote volumes. Screen shot attached.
The only file found on the encrypted disk image is a zip file where vpm appears in the middle of the file name.
The volume NO NAME is a Boot Camp partition. That also contains many .vpm files and none of those were found.

The additional files found by the smart folder are in two places:
/encrypted/clients/<various folders>
/NO NAME/Documents and Settings/<user>/My Documents

Houdaspot does find .docx files on the encrypted volume, but does not find .doc files there. Screen shot attached. Click image for larger version - Name: remotevolumes.jpg, Views: 8, Size: 1.47 MB Click image for larger version - Name: docx.jpg, Views: 9, Size: 1.19 MB

Hi!

Can Spotlight find .doc files on the encrypted volume?

What are the criteria for SmartSearch?

Yes, of course.
The search criteria are simply:
Name contains .doc on This Mac

Hi!

I must admit that I am currently at a loss to explain what's happening.

What happens when you specifically specify the encrypted disk image as search location?

What happens if you alter your HoudahSpot from "name ends with doc" to "name contains doc"?

Explicitly specifying the encrypted image volume finds .doc but not .vpm
Specifying user mounted remote volumes finds nothing

Hi!

It is normal that your second search finds no files. The encrypted disk image is not a remote but a local volume.

I have no explanation as to why vpm files are not found.

I take it the disks have a normal HFS+ file system.

Could you try the mdls command in Terminal.app on one of the files that should be found but is not?

HoudahSpot is not seeing Word 97 some (all?) files when searching for "documents", only when searching for "all files". Screen shots attached. What's up with that? Word 2008 issue that these "Compatability Mode" documents (don't get me started on Word 2008 issues) somehow aren't IDed as "documents"? Or something in HoudahSpot.

thanks

Hi!

Apple has defined a hierarchy of file types. E.g. in that hierarchy a JPEG is an image file and that in turn is a document, ...

Indexing of third party application's documents is done by Spotlight importer plugins provided by the application's vendor.

Early versions of the Word Spotlight importer failed to specify the Word files as sub-types of document. Thus they cannot be found when searching for documents.

The workaround is to make sure only the newer versions of Word are around and then force Spotlight to re-index those files. Then the new importer will be used which does the right thing.

Thanks, figured it was something like that. I know I could probably dig around and find answer, but what is the "force Spolight to re-index" process. I know this is a really basic question, but I thought Spotlight was the Mac OS search engine, and HoudahSpot replaced it. Does HoudaSpot bootstrap on top of Spotlight?

Hi!

The post by "louploup" actually pointed me in the right direction to figuring out why your files are not found.

As a workaround for a bug in Spotlight, HoudahSpot always specifies the search to be for a file of type "public.item". This is the root type in the hierarchy defined by Apple. Thus every file should be of that type.

Thing is the output from "mdls" shows that Spotlight has no type information at all for your files.

I'll try to figure out a solution and post a bug fix within the next few days. Thanks for your patience and help.

Hi!

HoudahSpot builds upon the Spotlight engine and provides an alternative user interface.

You may force Spotlight to reindex single files by simply opening and re-saving them.

You may also use the command line tool mdimport to force re-indexing.

Alternatively you may force Spotlight to re-index your drive. You will find the appropriate procedure on this forum or by Google-ing for it. You may also use the Spotless tool for this task.

In looking for some really old files, HoudahSpot was not returning the desired files. I could see the files & folder in the Finder and Spotlight was locating them also.

Changing Limit > Most Recently Opened to Recently Modified found the old files.

These files were migrated from a previous computer and had not been opened since.

Is that the expected behavior?

Thanks

Bob

Hi!

Thanks for reporting this issue.

It is likely due to the fact that to the knowledge of Spotlight these files were never opened.

I've also found that very old files are found by Spotlight but not by HoudahSpot. Whether I select "All most recently opened", or however I change the Limit... pane, it won't find those old files unless I open and save them.

See the attached screen dump.

Hi!

This issue was addressed by early 2.5 betas, but obviously broken again when other bug workarounds were added on. Beta 11 should address the issue.
