I found that this software will NOT update the metadata on Sony ARW files.

It will read it, but not write back to it.

And since Aperture doesn't like to load in seperate sidecars, I don't that this software will work for me unless I move down to shooting JPegs.

Any suggestions guys?

Hi!

You may want to convert your Sony ARW files to Adobe's DNG format: http://www.adobe.com/products/dng/

You may also investigate the third-party software Annoture which syncs metadata between iView MediaPro and Aperture. I hear iView MediaPro reads XMP sidecars.

Are Sony's ARW still not supported although I've read somewhere that HoudahGeo supports the same formats that are supported by iPhoto and Aperture?!

Are there any alternatives that support Sony's AWR format

Hi!

HoudahGeo can READ all the same formats as iPhoto or Aperture. You may directly export those images to Google Earth or Flickr.

HoudahGeo relies on the command line utility exifTool to write EXIF tags. This tool cannot write to Sony ARW files. Thus HoudahGeo cannot do so either. You may want to use XMP sidecar files as an alternative.

Hi!

I currently don't actively participate in the ExifTool project. I don't know their reasons for no implementing ARW support. It may just as well be that such support is forthcoming as it may be that the ARW format does not support EXIF tags.

Consequently I cannot make any predictions on when or if this feature will appear.

BTW, you may also investigate the possibility of using the free Adobe DNG Converter or Camera Raw to convert your images to the DNG format.

already tried DNG converter and it kind of worked - interestingly, the DNG file size was about half the size of the Sony source file - I wonder where the difference would be between a DNG and a JPG file as they are about the same size.

Hi!

DNG is a RAW format. From what I know, it should retain the full quality. I have no explanation for the difference in size. I actually have never used a DNG converter myself.

I wonder if there were a way to use AppleScript to integrate this software with Aperture, that way, since tags can be set in Aperture, that might take care of itself in some other way.

There are decidedly issues with DNG conversion, particularly since Adobe keeps upping the CameraRAW and DNG Converter version and tools, and each time they are more or less tied to the latest version of their CS software.

Hi!

I am no AppleScript expert. I will let others answer your question.
