I noticed that files I have that I know are properly tagged are just not showing up - for instance, I know I have at least two Herb Geller albums (I can see that they're in the proper place in the finder) but only one turns up in houdah.

What should I do?  Do I run some kind of index thing on the whole collection?

Help Pierre!

Hi!

You may force indexing a location by running the following at the command line:
mdimport /path/to/location
thanks!

can you help me with the syntax specifics (if that's the right term)

the volume I want to index is named
striped 2.7
(it's a RAID volume - 3 x 1 TB)

so is this the code line that I would run in terminal ?

mdimport /striped 2.7

thanks again!

Hi!

The syntax would be:
mdimport /Volumes/striped\ 2.7
If it is a complete volume you are trying to reindex, I would however suggest you use the third party tool Spotless to trash the Spotlight index. Rebuilding from a clean state will then happen automatically.

Hey - am trying spotless - and it tells me that it deleted the "10.6 index file" and that spotlight is re-indexing the volume (which is big - 2.7 TB)...

my question: do you know how long that indexing process will take? I guess it won't be quick at 2.7 TB...

thanks again!

Hi!

Indexing will indeed take quite some time.

Spotlight will show a black dot in its menu bar loupe icon while it is working on indexing.

is there a screen shot of what that menu bar loupe icon looks like?

I don't see anything in my spotlight upper right hand icon...

however, spotless tells me that "spotlight content indexing is active" - I guess it's still going.

I keep searching for Herb Geller albums as a test, and houdah keeps not finding one of the two that I have.  I know the meta data is encoded properly, and that the album is in the correct folder where it should be.

should I send some screen shots to confirm this?

or should I wait until spotless tells me that the indexing process is no longer active?  thanks!

thanks again for your help,

WF

PS: am wondering if there's a site somewhere that explains how spotlight works, the indexing process and all that...

Hi!

I believe Spotless means that the drive is indexed. I guess it is done.

Please do send screenshots.

I don't know any particular web site explaining Spotlight. Here's the gist:
Ever application declaring its own document type also provides a Spotlight plugin. Every time the system sees that a file has been modified, it looks for the appropriate importer plugin and asks that to provide metadata for that file. What metadata is provided, is left up to the plugin - i.e. the application vendor.

well, I think we got it - I made all these screenshots, and then I tried houdah one more time (searching for "Geller") and it FOUND the album that didn't turn up before.

I have to assume that everything worked - that it was a good idea to rebuild the spotlight index (using spotless), and that took over a day, but now everything is being found --- so far that's what I'm assuming.

so thanks!  will give you further reports!

more problems - sorry!

this morning - it seems like everything is gone... spotlight / houdah doesn't seem to be able to find anything once more.

am not sure what to do - maybe repeat the steps: get spotless to delete the index file, which will force the system, assume, to build a new index file - I guess that would take all night (for 2.7 TB) but I guess would certainly be worth it.

I could use another way to monitor the progress of the index as it's being built - am not sure if that exists or not... spotless tells me that the status of the indexing is on, but not where it is (percentage-wise or otherwise) in the indexing process...

thanks - sorry to bug you - we love houdah spot!

PS: am not sure if I should start a new thread or just keep going with the previous one... same issue... thanks!

Hi!

Once indexing is in progress, the standard Spotlight menu item should show progress when clicked.

Will!  It's Laurie P.  We've gotta stop meeting like this!
Just got Houdah and am learning how to use it.  Found you while checking out posts.  Houdah is incredibly cool.  L.  P.S.  Hope you resolved this.
